Bison reintroduced to Book Cliffs

Bison are returning to the Book Cliffs of eastern Utah.

Wildlife officials released 14 to the area during August. Another 30 will be delivered later this year in an effort to reintroduce a sustainable population in the area.

The bison were taken from a roundup conducted by the Ute Indian Tribe.

Fifteen were tested for disease, given ear tags and loaded onto trailers. One bison was gored to death on the trip. The remaining 14 were released onto public lands at the Book Cliffs.

State wildlife officials hope the bison are the start of a new free-roaming herd in the area.
